6 Reasons Why Family Swimming Trips Are the Best

Family Swimming Time

Spending quality time together as a family is harder than ever, with a quarter of UK parents admitting they only get to spend an average of 34 minutes of uninterrupted time with their children each day.

With upsetting statistics like this being a reality for so many families, it’s clear that the precious little time we do get to spend together needs to be fully taken advantage of, and there’s no better way to do this than with a family swimming trip.

Often neglected in the belief that expensive theme parks or cinema trips are a better option, the humble swimming day out is a much more valuable way to get the most out of your time with the kids, and here’s why:

1. It’s an affordable day out

A trip to the local swimming pool is the ideal way to treat the entire family without splashing the cash – if you’ll pardon the pool pun. At most swimming pools in England, kids under 16 and adults over 60 can swim for free, so the entire family from babies to grandparents can enjoy a great day out for very little cost. You can always upgrade your outing to visit a mega water fun park as these are usually very reasonably priced.

2. It’s all-inclusive

Swimming is often championed as the sport that’s suitable for all age groups. Babies can be taken swimming from birth, and the low-impact nature of the activity means it’s gentle on joints for those who are a little more advanced in years. In the swimming pool, every member of the family can go at their own pace and enjoy themselves without over exerting or getting bored.

3. You can all learn from each other

Swimming is an essential life skill for children to learn, and swimming as a family gives parents and older siblings the perfect opportunity to teach the youngest members of the clan how to swim while having fun at the same time. Besides, the little ones may have a thing or two to teach the parents too…in other words, be prepared for a lesson in underwater handstands. Don't forget floats and favourite pool toys. Adults have been known to have a lot of fun with a SwimFin.

4. It’s real quality time

Our children are officially the iPad Generation, and their lives are becoming ever more wrapped up in technology. Swimming is a great, natural way to have fun together and encourages lots of physical and social interaction, making it a far superior activity to sitting in front of the television or playing video games.

5. It’ll strengthen the family bond

You know what they say: Families who swim together, stay together. OK, so maybe they don’t actually say that, but we certainly do. Swimming together as a family encourages a great deal of eye contact and trust from parent to child and sibling to sibling. We’ve heard so many parents remark on the wonderful bonding power swimming has, particularly with young babies and toddlers, as it’s a fantastic source of fun and allows a real connection to be formed.

6. It’ll keep everyone trim

It’s a well-known fact we’ve talked about at length here on the blog; swimming is the ultimate family activity for keeping everybody fit and healthy without it feeling like real exercise. For babies and toddlers, swimming helps strengthen their heart, lungs and muscles, giving their overall development a fantastic kickstart. For older children and adults, swimming burns lots of calories and can even reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke with regular trips. All of these benefits are wrapped up in a form of exercise that’s gentle on the joints and easy to build into your family routine.
